How to Get a Thick Green Lawn

How to get a thick green Bermuda lawn in the spring.  Doc goes over the simple steps to have a thick green lawn in the spring. It’s important to understand that this is our lawn’s growing window. This means we want to push it with nutrients, water, and what it wants.

Our Bermuda lawns will thicken up quickly and start to spread. A soil test needs to be done if you have not. Understanding your lawn’s soil needs is a critical step. If you’re deficient in one nutrient it may impact the final results of you thick green lawn process.

Make sure you cut your lawn often and keep it low. Bermuda needs to be cut very low during this growth stage. We want the Bermuda grass to move sideways and fill in areas as it spreads. Doc puts down the lawn fertilizer and also does a treatment to raise the lawn phosphorus levels. The soil test results showed it was low. Then the Bermuda lawn is cut to 5/9 inch with the reel mower.

Hey Doc, powered reel mowers aren’t quite in my budget. Do you have any recommendations for any push reel mowers?

I’ve been enjoying and learning a ton from all of your content. I was wondering how and if the Bermuda program could be applied to Zoysia as well and what specific guidance you have for that type of lawn. I’m in Alabama.

Just bought a McLane you suggested. I cant get the setting below 7/8″ and Dolphin indicated thats about as low as it goes. Can you do a video showing how to adjust the Mclane GR-25 down to the 0.5″ level?
