Should You Dethatch Your Bermuda Lawn

Doc explains why he does NOT dethatch the Bermuda lawn.  Bermuda and other grasses that grow via a system of RUNNERS should not be dethatched.  It can do extensive damage to the lawn that will take months to repair.  Cool season lawns such as fescue like to be dethatched.  However, Bermuda and Saint Augustine should not.  DON’T confused consumer grade dethatchers with pro model Verti-Cutters. Why No Dethatching Bermuda?

We are talking about consumer grade dethatching machines.  Golf courses will often THIN OUT Bermuda fairways because the want fewer issues for the fall reseeding and they want a THINNER turf year round.  However, this is often done with specialty equipment including Verticutters.  They don’t use a “consumer type dethatcher” that simply PULLS up lower material with spring load tines.  VERTI CUTTING is NOT… like dethatching, even though it will remove some thatch.   If the Average home owner wants to thicken up their lawn, the proper care through nutrition and water will encourage this.
