When to Sharpen Lawn Mower Blades

Is there a method for me to repair a small nick on my GK bedknife? Not the reel, but the bedknife. Not sure how it happened, but I have a small gouge on the leading edge of the bedknife. Can I file it out, or will that mess up the edge for cutting?
