How to Stop Algae in Chicken Water Tanks
Algae needs sunlight and nutrients to grow. When you have a clear or translucent waterer sitting out in the summer sun, it’s a recipe for a green mess. Drinking algae-filled water isn’t ideal for your chickens’ health, and scrubbing out slime every other day is a waste of your time.
The key to preventing algae is blocking the sunlight and maintaining water quality.
Extreme Heat Tips: Shade Cloth and High-Velocity Fans
Chickens wear a down coat year-round, so when temperatures spike, they can easily overheat. Good ventilation and shade are non-negotiable.
I rely heavily on shade cloth to block the harsh UV rays while still allowing breezes to flow through the run. Combine that with a high-velocity fan to keep the air moving inside the coop or run, and you significantly reduce the risk of heat stress for your birds.
