Scalping Bermuda Lawns: The Early Spring Pre-Emergent Prep

Waiting for the perfect spring weather to start your lawn care is a mistake. In this video, Doc walks through the critical “Pre-Scalp” phase. This isn’t just about cutting grass; it’s about preparing the soil surface for maximum contact with pre-emergent treatments and waking up the dormant Bermuda.

Why We Scalp Before the Green-Up

Scalping is the process of removing the dead, tan-colored “dormant” canopy from last year. If you leave that dead grass on top, it acts like an umbrella, preventing your pre-emergent granules or liquids from reaching the soil. By scalping early, you allow the sun to hit the soil directly, warming it up faster and triggering earlier spring green-up.

Doc’s Pre-Scalp Steps

The Low Cut: Set your mower to one of its lowest settings. You want to remove the “brown” without hitting the dirt.
Clean the Surface: Bag your clippings. While Doc usually advocates for mulching, the spring scalp is the one time you must remove the debris to ensure your pre-emergent hits the ground.
Soil Temperature Watch: We start this process as soil temperatures approach 55°F. This is the “magic number” when weed seeds like crabgrass begin to germinate.

The Pre-Emergent & Jump Start Program

Once the lawn is scalped and cleaned, it’s time for the “Jump Start.” Doc recommends a dual-action approach:

Granular Pre-Emergent: Use a high-quality product like The Andersons Barricade (Prodiamine). Because we’ve scalped the lawn, these DG (Dispersible Granule) particles will move straight to the soil where they belong.
The Balanced Fertilizer: At this early stage, we aren’t looking for massive growth, but a “wake-up call.” A mild, balanced fertilizer provides the nutrients needed the moment the roots start to move.

Avoid the “Umbrella Effect”

The biggest takeaway from this video is preventing the “Umbrella Effect.” If you apply expensive pre-emergents on top of a thick, un-scalped dormant lawn, half of your product gets hung up in the dead grass. When it eventually rains, the product may wash away rather than soak in. Scalp first, treat second.
