Lawn Growth Regulator

Doc explains how to use the lawn growth regulator which is in granular form. (GGR)  An easy, step by step guide to applying granular growth regulator.  Growth regulators reduce the VERTICAL growth of you lawn, improve stress tolerance, and TIGHTEN up the turf.  The turf also becomes a darker green because chlorophyll is more concentrated.  Their benefits have been appreciated and used by golf courses for years.

NOTE FROM DOC:  “I have had plenty of experience with SPRAY growth regulators but I have kept away from them and the subject due to the ease of applying them WRONG.   I have spent weeks testing this product including applying it INCORRECTLY… just to see if any problems arise.  So far I have had ZERO issues and I feel 100% confident with it. THIS IS NOT about the price.  You can get liquid versions that will cost less per application.  This is about EASE OF USE and safety for your lawn.  The ONLY ODD THING you might see is a LIGHT HAZE on the lawn after a few cuttings. This is fairly normal and not any reason for concern.”

How to Use GGR Growth Regulator on Lawns

The new GGR Granular Growth Regulator is very easy and safe to use on all lawns.

  • You should be happy with your lawn, it should be healthy.
  • Apply GGR with any rotary type spreader.
  • Cut grass BEFORE applying.
  • While the bag and sheets have setting guides, DO NOT rely on them. Test YOUR OWN settings based on required pounds for your lawn. All spreaders have variances based on how they are assembled and used.
  • Use this lawn square foot calculator:  https://www.mapdevelopers.com/area_finder.php
  • For warm season grass such as Bermuda SOD  / Hybrid Bermuda Grass, apply 2.6 pounds per every 1000 sq ft.
  • For COMMON Bermuda grass increase the rate to 3 – 5 lbs per 1000 sq ft. Best effective rate will vary. Start with 3lbs.
  • For cool season grasses the listed rate is 5lbs
  • For best results and even coverage, apply early morning while visible dew is on the grass. This will keep your lines straight, coverage even, and cause the particles to stick briefly to the grass.
  • Do not WATER IN.
  • After two weeks you are not seeing the results you expected, apply ONE MORE POUND per 1000 sq ft.
  • Re-Apply every 4 weeks.
  • Stop applications 60 days before COLD WEATHER moves in.

How GGR Growth Regulator Works

GGR is a granular‐applied growth regulator for turf grass that can reduce mowing frequency, clipping production, and enhance turf grass color.  Over the time period of 0 to 24 hours , maximum absorption by the plant base was obtained in 8 h and by the leaf blade in 24 h. Absorption by the roots was negligible.

Of the trinexapac‐ethyl absorbed dy the plant base, over 50% was translocated to the plant foliage after 24 h. Trinexapac‐ethyl absorbed by the leaf blade, one‐third was translocated after 24 hours; the direction of movement was predominantly basipetal.

Growth Regulator Articles and Info

The goal of a successful GGR application program is to maintain enough GGR in plant to slow biosynthesis of gibberellin, the plant hormone that accelerates leaf elongation, for the entire growing season. Think of a bio-synthetic pathway like a river. Place a dam on the river and it stops downstream flow.

A PGR is applied to turf, it dams up the gibberellin bio-synthetic pathway and reduces leaf elongation. Repeated applications of PGRs are required because PGRs are broken down over time. This process is dependent on temperature; doubling the air temperature (degrees Celsius) roughly doubles the rate of breakdown. This means that scheduling PGR re-application intervals may change with higher temps.
